Expectations
At the start of the year, the teachers will explain some important expectations they have of students.
They make a lot of sense.

These expectations are easy to follow for the vast majority of students, and form a positive code of conduct we can take with us through life.
At Pioneer State High School, our purpose is achieving quality outcomes in a positive and caring learning environment. To achieve this, everyone in the school must take responsibility for the role they play in the school community.
-
The school rules are easily understood.
-
Most people find them easy to follow.
-
You are required by law to follow reasonable instructions given by teachers.
-
Through your attendance at Pioneer High School you and your parents have agreed to this.
-
The laws which govern behaviour in the community outside the school also apply within the school grounds and on excursions and camps.

Students enrolling during the year will be interviewed with one or both parents by one of the Administration team. Parents will need to make an appointment for an interview to discuss the enrolment of a prospective student by phoning the school office on 4955 9222.
At the enrolment interview, a date and time for the student to commence studies at the school will be mutually determined by the Administrator and parent.
Students are expected to be at school at all times except when sick. Parents will be advised through "Pioneering" or by special note, of any unscheduled holidays.
All absences must be explained by a note from a parent or guardian. Independent students are required to provide a note to authorise their absences. Students wishing to leave school at any time during the school day, must obtain permission from the Principal or one of the Deputy Principals. A student who needs to leave school to attend an appointment must bring a note signed by a parent/guardian, explaining the situation. This note is to be presented to the relevant Care Teacher before log-in. After the Care Teacher’s signature is obtained the student must then obtain the signature of all other teachers scheduled for that day whose lessons will be missed. Prior to departure from the grounds the students must present this note to the office staff who will supervise the student signing the absence register. If returning to school the student must again report to the office and log in via this register.
Any student who arrives late to school requires an explanatory note signed by a parent/guardian. This note must be presented at the Accounts and Records office in the Administration block. The rolls are then adjusted.
Students who are receiving Austudy or Abstudy allowances are required to notify the school of their absence. The Department of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA) who administers the benefits now requires a check of student's absences once a term. An approved absence is one for which a note, phone call or Doctor's certificate is provided to the school. Students who are mature age may certify their own absences. All other students should provide a note signed by a parent or legal guardian. For students who are absent from school for more than five unapproved days in a term a fourteen day penalty will be imposed. After this, a student loses one day’s payment for every additional unauthorised absence.
The school has First Aid facilities for minor accidents and does not cater for sick students. No prescribed medication will be administered by mouth, unless written permission has been received from a parent. All medication, apart from asthma puffers, must be left at the office. Whenever possible, parents will be notified by telephone and the sick student allowed to go home.
If a serious accident occurs, the ambulance will be called. If parents are unable to be contacted to make alternative arrangements, the student will be sent by ambulance to the Mackay Base Hospital.
All student equipment should be clearly and permanently labelled. Students are responsible for the care and maintenance of their textbooks and possessions. School lockers cannot be considered safe, although they can be convenient for holding bulky items.
Any large amount of money or other valuables should be handed in to the Accounts office for safe keeping during the day. No money or valuables should be left in school ports.
Student Organisers
Each student will be issued with a Student Organiser in each Semester for 2002. This should contain each night's homework as well as planning dates and due dates for assignments, projects and tests.
Some Hints to Effectively Use Student Time
An organised routine is essential for success.
Routine must be suited to lifestyle and should include:-
• homework and study time (dependent upon year level)
• time for physical activities
• time for dinner and relaxation
• a reasonable waking and retiring hour
• time for part-time work commitments (generally students in Years 10 - 12)
A daily timetable is provided for the student in the Student Organiser/Homework Book to assist them to organise their routine.
To help school staff in preventing accidents, we would appreciate parents' impressing the importance of the following safety rules on students.
In School Grounds
Students are expected to abide by the laws of the community, to show courtesy and consideration for others and to act responsibly at all times.
Students are not to communicate with any unauthorised outsiders.
Smoking is not permitted at school, going to and from school, or at school functions.
Papers and waste foods are to be placed in rubbish bins.
No cans or foodstuffs are to be taken onto the playing fields or into rooms.
Students may not enter the bike rack areas for any purpose other than to retrieve their own bikes.
The following areas are out of bounds:
| • |
Environmental area unless under teacher supervision |
| • | Between the fronts of buildings and the Fence lines |
| • | Areas of long grass and swampy soils |
| • | Manual Arts, Art, Commerce, Science and Home Economics blocks except when going to and from a room |
| • | Behind the multipurpose courts |
| • | Environmental area unless under teacher supervision |
Only students actively playing games or training for sport may be on the oval at breaks and before school.
In All Buildings
Students must act carefully so that injury is not caused to themselves, to fellow students or to staff.
Care must be taken with buildings and furnishings at all times.
Students must not be in a classroom unless a teacher is present.
Students must never enter a staffroom.
Movement from one classroom to another must be quick and orderly.
Students must keep away from equipment which is not designated for student use.
Under no circumstances are students to climb onto the roofs of buildings.
In Specialist Areas
In addition to the above, the specialist areas of Manual Arts, Home Economics, Art, Physical Education, Science Laboratories and Library have particular behaviour codes which students must follow while in those areas. These behaviour codes will be issued separately by each department.
Public Bus Passes
Financial assistance is given only for students who live further than 4.8 kilometres from the nearest State School providing the necessary level of instruction. To obtain a bus pass, the student should ask the bus driver for an application for a bus pass. The completed form is to be handed to the bus driver on the morning of the second day on which the student uses the bus service and the pass will be given to the student. No fare is charged on these days.
Please note the following:
| (a) |
the student must present the bus pass to the driver on each occasion the bus is used, otherwise he/she will be asked to pay the full fare; |
| (b) | a charge is made for a new bus pass to replace one that has been lost |
Students who are eligible for a bus pass but who live in an area where no bus service exists, may be eligible for some travel assistance in the form of a Conveyance Allowance. Details may be obtained from the school.
